AO PEER Webinar—Research mentorship

This webinar presented by the AO Program for Education and Excellence in Research (AO PEER) discusses how to foster a good mentee-mentor relationship from the research project idea to publication. On an expert panel a research mentee and a research mentor discuss and reflect on their roles and provide a guide to what makes a good mentee-mentor relationship.

Vincenzo Giordano, MD, Orthopaedic Trauma Surgeon, Hospital Municipal Miguel Couto, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil representing the mentor's perspective and Mike Mallow, a 4th year medical student at the Medical College of Georgia, USA shares his experience as mentee in the field of research. The webinar is moderated by Matthew Allen, Professor of Small Animal Surgery, Cambridge University, UK, and AO VET representative in the AO PEER taskforce.

Learning objectives:

  • Recognize how research mentorship contributes to a successful research career
  • Identify ways to find a mentor
  • Manage expectations of the mentorship collaboration for both the mentee and the mentor

AO PEER Webinar—Choosing the right animal model

Stephan Zeiter and Caroline Constant are presenting the interactive webinar. In this webinar you will learn about the importance of selecting the most appropriate animal model for your translational research. The experts from the AO Research Institute (ARI) will explain the steps needed to develop a sound research methodology that will allow you to answer your primary research question, and we will discuss about the ethical considerations when planning a translational research project.

Learning objectives:

  • Recognize the value of deliberate initial planning regarding the most appropriate animal model
  • Evaluate if the selected animal model is suitable to answer the primary research question
  • Reflect on the ethical implications of choosing an inappropriate animal model
  • Describe the translational research approach to link the preclinical research question to clinical practice.
